Some of the best fabric in New York is still sitting on real shelves, waiting for someone to walk in and pull a bolt. These ten Upstate shops sit along state routes, village main streets, and country roads from the Finger Lakes to the North Country.
Many keep short hours, a few take cash or checks only, and most want you to come in person to browse and buy. If you sew, quilt, or just miss shopping where a person helps you pick the right print, this list is for you.
1. Golden Lane Fabric, Penn Yan, NY

Bring your checkbook. Golden Lane Fabric does not take credit or debit cards, so cash or a check is how you leave with your yardage.
The shop sits at 3732 NY-14A outside Penn Yan, in the farm country of Yates County. It is a well-organized store with a large selection of quality quilting supplies and garment fabrics, which makes it useful whether you are piecing a quilt or sewing a dress.
There is no website to scroll and no delivery option. You come in, you browse, and the friendly staff help you sort through one of the broader fabric selections in the region.
Hours run Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM and Saturday from 8 AM to 4 PM, with Sundays closed. The early start is handy if you want to shop before a day around Keuka Lake, and the free parking lot keeps things easy.
2. Sew Crazy Fabric Shop, Glenfield, NY

Check the clock before you head out. Sew Crazy keeps a schedule all its own, with mornings on Monday and Thursday, afternoons Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, and a short Saturday window from 10 AM to 3 PM.
The shop is on NY-12 in Glenfield, a small Lewis County hamlet between the Tug Hill region and the Adirondack foothills. Out here, a fabric shop is a real asset for anyone who sews.
Inside, you will find a good quantity of fabric in a wide range of colors and prints, plus sewing supplies to finish the job. There is no website and no delivery, so the only way to see the stock is to show up.
I would save this one for a North Country drive with a quilting project in mind and a few colors to match.
3. The Old Creamery Fabrics & Quilting, Ellisburg, NY

A name like The Old Creamery tells you this shop has roots in Ellisburg’s rural past. Today the building at 12022 NY-193 is filled with fabric bolts and notions instead.
What sets it apart is the teaching side. The shop offers quilting classes and retreats, so it works as a gathering place for quilters as well as a store.
The owners and staff are known for being knowledgeable and helpful, and the patterns and fabrics cover a wide range of styles. Repair services are also listed among its offerings.
Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM. Shopping is in person or by in-store pickup, with no delivery.
4. The Crafternoon Shoppe, Whitney Point, NY

Quilters and knitters can shop the same aisles here. The Crafternoon Shoppe on Railroad Street in Whitney Point stocks fabric, quilting supplies, yarn, needlecraft kits, and more.
The Broome County village store calls itself a local fabric and craft shop, and it lives up to that. The mix of fabrics and quilting accessories is varied enough to cover several kinds of projects in one stop.
Plan around the schedule. It is open Wednesday through Friday from 10 AM to 5 PM and Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM, closed Sunday through Tuesday.
The shop is also LGBTQ+ friendly, and buying happens in the store or through in-store pickup.
5. Country Girl Crafts & Quilts, Chestertown, NY

Up in the Adirondacks, US-9 runs right past one of the region’s most respected quilt shops. Country Girl Crafts & Quilts sits at 6328 US-9 in the Warren County hamlet of Chestertown.
Serious quilters treat this place as a stocked-up headquarters. The fabric is gorgeous, the products are high quality, and the service is a big part of the shop’s reputation.
The selection aims to cover nearly everything a quilter could need, from fabric to supplies. Free Wi-Fi is available if you need to check a pattern.
It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30 AM to 4 PM. Shopping is on-site only, so pair a visit with a trip through the southern Adirondacks.
6. The Quilt Farm, Boston, NY

Head upstairs before you leave. The Quilt Farm saves a surprise for the second floor, where quilt displays show what all that fabric can become.
The first floor is the working shop, packed with quilting fabrics and panels. The store also carries books, patterns, and other quilting supplies, and the fabric selection is huge.
You will find it at 5623 S Feddick Rd in Boston, a rural Erie County town south of Buffalo. It is an easy country run for Western New York sewists.
Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 AM to 5 PM. There is no delivery, so the bolts stay on the farm until you come get them.
7. Quaint Country Quilter fabric shop, Watertown, NY

Saturday mornings are short here, only 9 AM to noon. During the week, Quaint Country Quilter opens Wednesday through Friday from 1 to 5 PM.
The shop is on Perch Lake Road outside Watertown in Jefferson County. It focuses on two things, quilting fabric and notions, and it does them well.
The space is full of fabrics, notions, patterns, and more. If you like a focused shop instead of a giant craft store, this one fits.
Shopping is in person only, with no delivery. A quick call before a long drive is smart given the limited hours.
8. Creekside Fabrics, Quilts & Yarn, Arcade, NY

Need a sewing machine and the fabric to go with it? Creekside on East Main Street in Arcade handles both, with a vast fabric selection alongside sewing machines.
The Wyoming County shop is a full quilt store. Repair services are listed, and the shop also handles quilting work on customer quilt tops.
Look for a small range of steampunk quilt and embroidery projects, which is not something every shop carries. Notions, embroidery items, and sewing tools round things out.
Monday is the late night, open 9:30 AM to 8 PM. Tuesday through Friday runs 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM and Saturday 9 AM to 3 PM, with Friday afternoon and Saturday the busiest times.
Free lot and street parking make it simple.
9. Heartworks Quilts & Fabric, Fly Creek, NY

Cooperstown traffic rolls along NY-28, and just up the road in Fly Creek sits a shop built for quilters. Heartworks Quilts & Fabric is at 6237 NY-28 in this historic Otsego County hamlet.
The owner is known for being very helpful, and the fabric selection is chosen with quilters in mind. It is the kind of personal service that keeps people coming back to small shops.
Hours are Wednesday through Friday from 10 AM to 4 PM and Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM. Shopping is on-site, with no delivery.
I would plan this one into a Cooperstown day trip.
10. Handloom Batik, Hudson, NY

Warren Street in Hudson is known for antiques and design shops, and Handloom Batik adds handmade textiles to the mix. The store is at 532 Warren St.
This is the most global stop on the list. You will find lots of quality fabric and hand-loomed textiles, along with scarves, hand-carved wooden boxes, and Indian stationery.
The pieces reflect artisan craftsmanship, and prices are considered reasonable for the quality. It is a good place for unusual fabric you will not see at a typical quilt shop.
Hours are Thursday through Saturday from noon to 6 PM. There is no delivery, so plan a Hudson walk around it.
