Some of the best advice in Upstate New York still comes from a person standing behind a cutting counter with a bolt of fabric and a ruler. Quilt shops are where beginners learn how much backing to buy and where longtime quilters find the exact shade they have been hunting for.

From an Erie Canal village to the Catskills and the Adirondacks, these eight independent shops keep that hands-on tradition going. If you sew, or love someone who does, this is a list worth saving for your next road trip.

1. Country Treasures, Brockport, NY

Back in 1981, Country Treasures opened its doors on Main Street in Brockport, and more than four decades later it is still cutting fabric for quilters. That kind of staying power is rare for any small shop, let alone one in a canal village.

The specialty here is traditional and historical prints. If your quilts lean toward reproduction looks, the selection is known as one of the strongest around.

Fabric is only part of the story. The women-owned shop also carries folk art and primitive accessories, which fit right in with Brockport’s preserved downtown.

Plan around the hours. The shop is closed Mondays, open 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM Tuesday through Friday, 11 AM to 4 PM Saturday, and noon to 3 PM Sunday, with free lot and street parking nearby.

2. Creekside Fabrics, Quilts & Yarn, Arcade, NY

Monday night sewers, take note. Creekside Fabrics in Arcade stays open until 8 PM on Mondays, a rare late window for a small-town quilt shop.

The shop on East Main Street covers a lot of ground. Expect a wide range of fabrics, notions, yarn, sewing machines, and a clearance section that bargain hunters will want to check first.

It also offers finishing help. The shop can take a quilt top and turn it into a completed quilt, plus it handles repair services.

Creekside is veteran-owned and women-owned, and it fits the friendly main-street feel of this Wyoming County village. Fridays and Saturdays tend to be busiest, and there is free on-site parking.

3. The Patchwork Co., Windham, NY

Not many quilt shops can claim a house built in the 1830s. The Patchwork Co. fills a restored Victorian home on Route 23 in Windham with fabric in just about every color you could want.

The staff are known for practical, hands-on help. Ask for guidance on coordinating fabrics or working out backing and background yardage, and they will help you sort it out at the counter.

Windham sits in the Catskill High Peaks, so a stop here pairs easily with a mountain drive. I would save this one for a fall weekend.

Hours are limited, so check before heading out. The shop is open Monday and Thursday through Saturday from 11 AM to 5 PM.

4. Adirondack Quilts, South Glens Falls, NY

A broken sewing machine can stall a whole project. Adirondack Quilts in South Glens Falls handles that problem along with the fabric side, offering machine sales, repair, and assembly services.

The fabric selection is wide enough to make choosing hard. Staff have a reputation for being friendly and informative, which matters when you are matching colors or comparing machines.

The shop sits on 5th Street, just south of Lake George at the edge of the Adirondacks. Free lot and street parking make it an easy stop, and curbside pickup is available too.

Hours run Tuesday through Saturday, 9 AM to 5 PM.

5. The Old Creamery Fabrics & Quilting, Ellisburg, NY

Out in farm country of southern Jefferson County, a building called The Old Creamery now holds bolts of fabric instead of dairy. The name alone makes it a fun stop on a North Country drive.

Inside, shelves are packed with fabric and notions. The shop also runs quilting classes and retreats, so it works for curious beginners as well as experienced sewers.

The staff are known for being welcoming to newcomers and knowledgeable about machine repair. That mix of teaching and fixing gives it a real community role in a rural township.

Visit Tuesday through Saturday between 10 AM and 4 PM.

6. Calico Gals, Syracuse, NY

Central New York quilters have a familiar meeting spot on New Court Avenue. Calico Gals is a well-stocked shop with extensive fabric collections and sewing machine sales.

What stands out is the people. Staff and fellow quilters are known for being welcoming, encouraging, and quick to help.

Practical perks help too. There is free on-site parking, free Wi-Fi, curbside pickup, and repair services.

Calico Gals is open weekdays from 10 AM to 5 PM and Saturdays from 10 AM to 4 PM.

7. Quilters Corner, Ithaca, NY

Room to spread out is a big plus at Quilters Corner on West State Street. This Ithaca shop is spacious, with fabric, patterns, tools, machines, and dedicated space for classes.

Classes are a major draw, and the range is extensive. The store also stocks supplies for projects beyond quilting.

The women-owned shop is open seven days a week, including Sunday from noon to 4 PM, which suits weekend visitors exploring the Finger Lakes. Weekday hours run 10 AM to 5 PM, Saturday 10 AM to 4 PM.

Parking lot pickup is available, and repair services are offered.

8. Country Girl Crafts & Quilts, Chestertown, NY

Route 9 through the Adirondacks has plenty of scenery, and in Chestertown it also has a serious quilt shop. Country Girl Crafts & Quilts stocks quality fabric and the supplies most quilters go looking for.

Help goes beyond fabric. Quilters bring in sewing machines for assistance, and the shop also hosts quilt retreats.

Free Wi-Fi is available. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 9:30 AM to 4 PM, so plan your mountain drive with that window in mind.

Together, these eight shops prove the cutting counter is still alive and well in Upstate New York. Pick one close to home or string a few into a road trip.
