Some Arizona shops are built for a quick in-and-out errand, and these four are not those shops. Walk into any of them and you will find shelves loaded with HO and N scale train gear, off-road RC trucks, plastic model kits, paints, rockets, and parts bins that can swallow an afternoon. They are spread across Glendale, Tucson, and Queen Creek, so most Valley and Tucson folks have one within an easy weekend drive.

Browsing costs nothing, which makes them a solid indoor stop when the heat pushes you off the trails. Each one has its own personality, from a long-running Phoenix-area favorite to a Tucson store that started with railroad books. If you have a kid who loves RC racing, a parent who still talks about their old train set, or you are that person, save this list and plan a stop.

Slot cars, model rockets, and RC boats all under one roof is a rare combo these days. Hobby Bench on Bell Road in Glendale still stocks that classic spread, and it is a long-standing name for West Valley hobbyists.

Train fans will find model electric trains in multiple scales. The model kit side covers military, aircraft, cars, and sci-fi subjects, plus figurines for anyone building dioramas.

RC shoppers get plenty of room to browse too. The store carries a large inventory of RC cars and planes, including off-road models that suit Arizona dirt lots.

Hours are generous, running 9:30 AM to 8 PM on weekdays, 9:30 AM to 6 PM Saturday, and 11 AM to 5 PM Sunday. Weekend afternoons get busy, so a Tuesday afternoon visit may give you more elbow room. Call 602-547-1828 before driving over if you need a specific part.

2. Arizona Hobbies, South Tucson, AZ

Back in 1998, this shop opened with a focus on model trains and railroad literature. That rail-first history still shows, and Arizona Hobbies is one of the last stores in the Tucson area carrying HO and N gauge railroading supplies.

The lineup has grown well beyond the tracks. Today you will find scale models, rockets, kites, tools, and paints, along with a solid selection of RC cars, trucks, and airplanes.

Plan around the schedule, because it is not a seven-day operation. The store is closed Sunday and Monday, open 10 AM to 6 PM Tuesday and Friday, 10 AM to 4 PM Wednesday, 10 AM to 7 PM Thursday, and just 9 AM to 1 PM on Saturday.

Parking is free in the on-site lot at 3600 S Palo Verde Rd. The shop also runs an online store with order pickup, handy if you want to reserve that boxcar before making the trip.

3. The Hobby Place at Ace, Tucson, AZ

Most people head to an Ace store for screws and light bulbs. On East 22nd Street in Tucson, the trip can turn into a full hobby run instead.

The Hobby Place at Ace is a classic, old-school hobby store setup. Expect plastic model kits, trains, RC cars, wargaming gear, and a strong stock of paints and modeling supplies.

The paint and supply side is a big draw for builders who need one more color or a fresh glue bottle mid-project. It makes a practical stop when a model sits half-finished on the workbench.

Hours are simple and steady at 9 AM to 6 PM every day of the week. Saturday afternoons draw the biggest crowds, while weekday mornings tend to be quiet.

4. Superstition Hobbies, Queen Creek, AZ

Floor to ceiling, packed with RC gear. Superstition Hobbies in Queen Creek is on the smaller side, but the shelves make up for it with RC vehicles, wheels, bodies, and parts stacked high.

The specialty here is radio control in every form. Planes, helicopters, cars, and boats all share space, along with the accessories and parts needed to keep them running.

Customization is a big part of the appeal. If you want to swap bodies or upgrade wheels on a basher, this is a smart East Valley stop, and the shop also carries model trains.

The staff are friendly and patient with questions, which helps if you are new to the hobby. Hours run 10 AM to 6 PM weekdays, 10 AM to 5 PM Saturday, and noon to 4 PM Sunday, with curbside pickup available.

For a quieter browse, try a Monday or Wednesday. Thursday and Saturday afternoons bring the crowd.
